Four Seasons of Hoodies: What Actually Sells
Four Seasons of Order Data
We went back through distributor orders for four seasons of hoodies, every October to February from 2022 to 2026. That's every hooded piece on our books, across 445 styles and 63 brands, all ordered by distributors like you.
Here is what the numbers say about the hoodies distributors ordered: styles, colors, size runs and where the print goes.
1. The pullover won
Three out of four hooded pieces last season were pullovers. In 2022-23 it was closer to half.
| Hoodie type | 2022-23 | 2025-26 |
|---|---|---|
| Pullover | 57% | 76% |
| Zip (full or quarter) | 25% | 15% |
| Hooded tee or performance | 13% | 8% |
| Hooded jacket | 4% | 1% |
Zips are still a real slice of the season, but they have lost ground every year. If your customer is undecided, the pullover is the safer bet.
2. Gildan 18500 is still the king, but the crown is slipping
The Gildan 18500 was the number one pullover every single season. It still leads by a wide margin, at 16% of all hooded pieces over four seasons.
Its share is shrinking, though. The 18500 was 31% of all pullovers in 2022-23 and 19% last season. Port & Company PC78H held second place every season, at 11% to 15%.
What changed is choice. Distributors ordered 195 different hooded styles in 2022-23 and 259 last season, a 33% jump. Customers are asking for something other than the default.
3. The styles on the rise
Three trends stood out last season.
Softer and lighter. The Gildan SF500 Softstyle Midweight went from 1% of pullovers in 2022-23 to 7% last season. It is now the third best-selling pullover, and Military Green is its top color.
Name brands doubled. Retail names (Carhartt, Champion, Nike, New Era, The North Face and others) went from 7.5% of hooded pieces to 15%. Carhartt CTK121 and Nike Club Fleece NKDR1499 led the climb. The Nike went from under 1% of pullovers in 2022-23 to almost 4% last season.
Other options gained. District DT6100 more than doubled its share of pullovers over the four seasons, and Jerzees 996M doubled.
The takeaway: the 18500 still fills the big orders, but a softer or branded option is now a normal ask.
4. Colors: black, gray, navy, then everything else
Black is about a third of every hoodie season, every year. Add gray and navy and you've covered 71% of all hooded pieces over four seasons.
HTG order data, every October to February from 2022 to 2026. Bar colors show the garment color family.
Two shifts to watch, leaving out hooded tees and performance pieces:
- Earth tones are climbing. White, cream, tan and brown went from 2.5% to 6.5%.
- Green is back. It reached 6.5% last season, helped by Military Green on the SF500.
Safety colors were 3.5% of all hooded pieces, more than purple, gold, orange and pink combined. Work crews wear hoodies too.
5. Build the size run bigger than you think
XL outsold Medium in all four seasons. 2XL and up was 17% of adult hoodies, so a size run that tops out at XL leaves a lot of customers out.
If your customer wants 100 hoodies and doesn't know the split, this is where the data points:
| XS | S | M | L | XL | 2XL | 3XL | 4XL and up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 9 | 20 | 28 | 25 | 12 | 4 | 1 |
6. Hoodie season is an adult season
Youth hoodies fell from 4.8% of hooded pieces in 2022-23 to 1.6% last season. Women's cuts held at 2% to 4%.
When youth sizes are in the order, the art needs its own size. That's the next section.
7. Where the print goes on hoodies
A hoodie is not a tee with a hood. The pocket and the hood both take print space, so the standard sizes change.
Front: the pocket costs you height. The standard adult hoodie front is 12" x 9", placed 2" to 4" down from the collar seam. A tee front runs 12" x 15". That's 6" of height the pocket takes away.

Back: start below the hood. The standard adult back is 12" x 15", starting 4" down so the hood doesn't cover the top of the art.

Youth: size it separately. The youth front is 9" x 7" and the youth back is 10" x 12". The biggest trap we see is the same imprint size on youth and adult. If the order has both, plan two sizes of art.

The short version
- Pullover over zip.
- The 18500 for the big order, and a softer or branded option ready when the customer asks.
- Black, gray and navy first. Earth tones and green are rising.
- Load the size run toward L, XL and 2XL.
- Hoodie front 12" x 9", back 12" x 15" starting 4" down. Youth gets its own art.
